Baja California Sur
Baja California Sur is Spanish for Southern Lower California. Its area is one of the thirty-one states in Mexico. One of three original
Californias designated by the Spanish, Baja California Sur is particularly known today for its excellent fishing, golfing, warm climate and
tourism appeal. Baja California Sur is a world class destination for people seeking the sun and surf. There are approximately 500,000 people
residing in this amazing part of the world.
This desert region of Mexico is surrounded by majestic waters, sparkling blue and green. On the west you find the Pacific Ocean; to the east lies the Sea of Cortez. At the tip of Baja California
Sur are the well-known beach areas that comprise the Los Cabos region. Many people flock to this part of Mexico to enjoy Cabo’s flawless
beaches, warm waters and luxurious resorts. With so much to see and do, Baja California Sur is the perfect place to visit.
For many people Baja is synonymous with exceptional, deep sea fishing. World famous fishing tournaments are held here and many record catches
have been made in the waters off Baja. There is a remarkable variety of marine life and up to 900 species of fish have been recorded in the local
waters. Big game fishing is at its best in Baja. The type of fish most sought after include: Dorado, Marlin, Mackerel, Yellow fin Tuna,
Wahoo, Rooster fish, Amberjack, Sailfish, and Grouper.
Cabo has also become a major international golfing destination. There are seven championship courses whose
famous designers include Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones II, Roy Dye and Tom Weiskopf. The courses are both challenging and jaw-dropping
in their natural beauty including vistas of desert, mountain and oceanfront terrain.
La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur, and is a popular tourist city. Both airline and ferry services make this capital a main
destination for travelers. La Paz is also the city made famous by John Steinbeck in his novel, The Pearl. Many people visit La Paz to delve into
its glorious marine life and cultural history. Snorkeling, diving, hiking, fishing, boating and more are all activities available in La Paz.
Baja California Sur is home to many islands which can be visited by boat and even kayaks. One popular activity is to visit Baja California Sur
during the whale migration season in winter. The whales come to the local waters to bear their young and can be seen off shore of both the Baja
peninsula and its local islands and bays.
